How does a natural draft cooling tower work
Nov 23, 2024
A natural draft cooling tower works by utilizing the principles of convection to remove heat from a building or industrial process. These cooling towers are tall, cylindrical structures with a large opening at the bottom and a smaller opening at the top.
As warm air rises, it creates a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the tower. This pressure difference causes air to be drawn in through the bottom opening, where it then travels up through the tower. As the warm air rises, it comes into contact with cool water that is cascading down through the tower in a series of baffles or fill media.
The heat from the warm air is transferred to the cool water, which causes the water to evaporate and carry the heat away with it. The now-cooler air is released out of the top of the tower, while the water is collected at the bottom and recirculated back through the system.

Natural draft cooling towers are an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient way to remove excess heat from buildings or industrial processes. They require no additional power source to operate, as they rely solely on the natural movement of air for cooling. Additionally, these cooling towers produce no emissions or waste products, making them a sustainable cooling solution.
